Details:
Nidon's Track was first seen by Dewar in 1949 running c30 deg E of N, 240ft E of Viper's Track, upon whose line it apparently converges S of Shapwick Moor Rhyne. In 1953 when further peat digging again exposed this trackway, it was excavated by Dewar. He opened a further section in 1955. In 1959 the track was again recognised in another peat face, and a large pile extracted. Nidon's Track is similar in dimension and construction to Viper's Track (PRN 10736). Radiocarbon tests of mortised timber and peat gave a range of dates from 2482bp to 2642bp +-120. {1}
The probable junction of Nidon's Track, Viper's Track (PRN 10736), Platform Track (PRN 10737) and Dewer's Track is in an area called Tully's Field which is scheduled as AM 398 (see PRN 10732). {4}
29 oak samples recovered during excavations in 2003 were dendrochronologically analysed. No absolute dates resulted. {5}
